Why Have A Regular Eye Doctor Appointment

OK, So I had to go to the eye doctor for the first time in my life a few weeks back as I was having issues reading my laptop screen at work.  Anyway thinking its just because I have reached the age of 40 I figured I was due for glasses.  Well it so happens that they check your blood pressure whey you go in for a eye exam, Who knew.  Knowing I’m a smoker , overweight and out of shape I wasn’t all that surprised to see it was quite high.  161/105 if I recall correctly.  This not only alarmed the nurse that was doing initial heath check on me but the eye doctor himself wasnt too pleased and recommended I head straight to my physician and get checked out.  I agreed and said I would look into it when I got home.   So the eye exam gets completed and as I has suspected I need glasses, bi-focals no less   So I pick out some frames and place my order and head home feeling older than dirt.

I really didn’t look too hard at my paperwork and just threw it on the table with the mail.  Later that afternoon my wife, a nurse by the way, picked up the papers to see exactly what I had done.  To my shock and horror the eye doctor had written my blood pressure on there, this of course immediately sent my wife into panic mode.   She tried talking me into going into the emergency room etc… afraid I was going to drop dead for sure, but she settled for an appointment with my family physician the next day.

Now if you couldn’t tell already , I’m not a big fan of any doctor.  They have this bad habit of preaching about my being overweight, out of shape and insist I stop smoking so I rarely go to see them.  This time however seeing my wife was so concerned I actually went in like a good little boy.  It didn’t shock me to hear that he confirmed what the eye doctor had told me and immediately put me on a prescription to control my blood pressure.  This is just where the story begins.

A month later I had to go in to have some blood work drawn and visit my family doctor to make sure the medication was working as intended.  The blood pressure medication did little to help my condition and I was subsequently prescribed a different dosage.  The doctor was about to walk out and send me on my way and he asked where my lab results were.   I explained I wasn’t given any and they were supposed to be sent to his office.  A few minutes of waiting and he comes back into the office shaking his head.  Sigh,  here it comes again.  Your overweight, cholesterol is too high etc….   However I was quite taken back by his next comments.  He started going over various numbers all were bad of course but then he started talking about blood sugars and diabetes.  What,  I just had bad eye sight and now your telling me I’m diabetic?   He said I would have to sit trough some 3 or 4 hours gglucose test the next day, give more blood and give a urine sample.  To  make a long story short turns out that going to visit my eye doctor, has revealed a major blood pressure issue and the fact that I know have diabetes.   So if you ever ask your self why have a regular eye doctor appointment maybe you’ll think twice about what might actually come of it. I’ll be battling these problems with my son’s help doing the Power 90 workout program
